As most of you may already know, former Apple CEO and Chairperson of the board, Steve Jobs passed away today. (apple.com/stevejobs). A true creative genius for sure, he led Apple to reach unthinkable heights through his career.
After his return to Apple, he introduced the revolutionary iMAC in 1998, the first in line for the innovative and state-of-the art “i” products. Steve was the genius who led the team that changed how you communicate, how you listen to music, how you watch TV, how you read books and through the variety available in the App Store: change everything you do.
The Apple brand has seen many highs and lows since it was found, but Steve was always around, first as the co-founder, then competitor (in 1985, Jobs was ousted from Apple and founded NeXT) and then his return as the CEO in 1997.
When a major brand like Apple produces something, there is ofcourse a whole team behind the curtains with the design, technology, the marketing and so on, all the many aspects to a brand and a product. When Tim Cook (present CEO of Apple) took over from Steve in January this year, a lot of blogs and journalists said Tim was the person running the show and was responsible for a lot of the decisions behind the curtains as Jobs’ health was deteriorating. I think it goes without saying that Jobs’ was still a huge force, mentor and decision-maker in the company. But Jobs was the face of Apple. His is the first face you think of when you think of the Apple brand. Yesterday when Tim Cook presented the iPhone 4S, a lot of us were looking and comparing him to Steve and his presenting style. Cook apparently came across as much more subtle in his style than Jobs.
My question here, since the sad demise of Steve Jobs, can new Apple CEO Tim Cook live up to the expectations of fanboys, fangirls, apple lovers and critics? Will we be able to see him as the new face and, so to speak the new god of Apple inc?
I think what remains to be seen is what the future of the brand will look like in terms of quality, stocks, products and if they go wrong, in terms of crisis.
