New Portfolio

Since I’m going to graduate soon and blogger decided to delete pictures off my portfolio, I thought it would be nice to make a mini portfolio until I have a proper website ready. So here it is: http://samansohail.carbonmade.com/ 🙂

The Apple brand. The post Steve Jobs era.

As most of you may already know, former Apple CEO and Chairperson of the board, Steve Jobs passed away today. (apple.com/stevejobs). A true creative genius for sure, he led Apple to reach unthinkable heights through his career.
After his return to Apple, he introduced the revolutionary iMAC in 1998, the first in line for the innovative and state-of-the art “i” products. Steve was the genius who led the team that changed how you communicate, how you listen to music, how you watch TV, how you read books and through the variety available in the App Store: change everything you do.
The Apple brand has seen many highs and lows since it was found, but Steve was always around, first as the co-founder, then competitor (in 1985, Jobs was ousted from Apple and founded NeXT) and then his return as the CEO in 1997.
When a major brand like Apple produces something, there is ofcourse a whole team behind the curtains with the design, technology, the marketing and so on, all the many aspects to a brand and a product. When Tim Cook (present CEO of Apple) took over from Steve in January this year, a lot of blogs and journalists said Tim was the person running the show and was responsible for a lot of the decisions behind the curtains as Jobs’ health was deteriorating. I think it goes without saying that Jobs’ was still a huge force, mentor and decision-maker in the company. But Jobs was the face of Apple. His is the first face you think of when you think of the Apple brand. Yesterday when Tim Cook presented the iPhone 4S, a lot of us were looking and comparing him to Steve and his presenting style. Cook apparently came across as much more subtle in his style than Jobs.
My question here, since the sad demise of Steve Jobs, can new Apple CEO Tim Cook live up to the expectations of fanboys, fangirls, apple lovers and critics? Will we be able to see him as the new face and, so to speak the new god of Apple inc?
I think what remains to be seen is what the future of the brand will look like in terms of quality, stocks, products and if they go wrong, in terms of crisis.

Dailies # 1 – Cell Size and Scale

A well designed and thought out comparison study of cell sizes. Loved that they compared it to 12 point Times Regular!

‘Breaking’ the mould

I’m liking the new Mcdonald’s advert for their fruit shakes. Fubiz reads: ‘..filming cold fruits with -196°C and by crushing them the ones against the others’.
Very exciting to look at!

Our final year degree show exhibition (organised by the students themselves) titled ‘Worth Holding Onto?’ took place at the Village Underground last month. One of my classmates, Rob Bowes has compiled the experience into a short stop frame movie. Have a look see here

Our show catalogue can be seen here on Alexandra’s blog
All of us passed with amazing results, so proud of the Class of 2010. 🙂

Shark at the Discovery Channel Building!

I’m lovin this installation of a shark at the Discovery Channel building. Smartly placed so that it gives an illusion of a shark embedded in the building. I think it’s in 5 parts as far as I can see : top, back, front and the sides.
This was done for Shark Week that starts Aug 1.

EOS initial logo ideas

EOS branding

EOS, Eastern Testing Services is a fairly new company that provides services to the oil drilling industry. Moving bases to Dubai and Iraq recently, they are looking to redesign themselves. This is going to be my first full blown corporate project, so fingers crossed!

Anyway, so obviously I’ve been looking at some identities in the oil industry.

Red seems to be the colour of choice most of the time, Halliburton being a popular example.

Mostly text based logos, like Shlumberger. Since I was Shlumberger kid, I remember their redesign, from bold huge stripes to very minimal. (can’t find an example of the old one)

Then ofcourse ALOT of them are bound to have a drop of oil in them.

So anyway, will be posting the work that I’m going to be doing for EOS.
